Doña Sofía, Honorary President at Angel Corella’s performance of the “Suite del Corsario”
The charity performance in aid of Alzheimer sufferers organised by the Royal Hispania Foundation of Vintage Boats with the collaboration of the Ángel Corella Foundation had Queen Sofía as its honorary president. The Palma de Mallorca Auditorium hosted the event, the proceeds from which were donated to the Alzheimer Project that the Fundación Reina Sofía sponsors.
Doña Sofía, wearing a brown and white camisole and flowered slacks, arrived at the theatre accompanied by Princess Alia of Jordan and Tatiana Ratchild and her husband, Doctor Froucheau, with whom she had spent the morning following the “Admiral Count of Barcelona” regatta on board the “Somni”. She was greeted by various members of the Balearic Government and a regatta sailor presented her with a bunch of flowers. She entered auditorium to a grand ovation from the public and took her seat in the first box.
On stage, Madrid-born Ángel Corella, the American Ballet’s principal dancer and other members of his company, solists such as Matthew Holding, Carmen Corella and Hernán Cornejo, with a choreography by the Argentine Margarita Fernández, delighted the audience by dancing to Tchaikovsky, Mozart and Gershwin. Subsequently, the dancer and his ballet troupe performed the Suite del Corsario. At the end of the performance, the Queen went on stage to meet the dancers.

How the press reported it
“…The genuine jewel of the evening was “Amaduo”, choreographed by the Argentine Margarita Fernández, which draws inspiration from Mozart and was specifically written for the duo comprising the solists of the American Ballet Carmen Corella and Hernán Cornejo. The massive figure of Ángel Corella, considered the number one dancer in the classical ballet world, makes a virtue of difficulty, with a permanent recital of dazzling and impossible figures through artistic exercises of elegant lines, sober, and always perfumed with excellence”.
Fernando Merino “El Mundo/El Día de Baleares”
“…Ángel Corella is exceptional, a fact that he demonstrates in every performance. Irrespective of his track record, he comes on to the stage as if it were his debut (or his last performance, or his only one), with all the zest he can muster to seduce the public, to conquer the stage. He leaps as few dancers do nowadays, and every leap and every pirouette makes the artist happier, more satisfied. He enjoys and conveys his pleasure, infecting everybody with this enthusiasm and a touch of humour. The pleasure that Corella feels is so physical and absolute that there is no transcendence in his effort: pure joy of the dance, of leaping. And the repertoire and the choreography match this festive and delightful concept, although he does offer some experimentation such as in the second dance: the more personal music of Mozart inspire a foreboding and melancholic tone heightened by the tenebrist lighting and a more modern and expressive choreography in which an extraordinary dancer excels”.
